The Settle and Carlisle line
The Settle and Carlisle line was opened in 1876. Built by the Midland Railway, it needed many expensive structures. One such was the Ribblehead viaduct. The viaduct, restored in 1991, is now a tourist attraction. Surviving many closure attempts, the line was reprieved in 1989.
The Midland Railway used a standard style of architecture. Stations used stone and slate. The windows and doors were painted red. Many original Midland station buildings survive.
