This book is designed as a companion to LNER Steam 1923- 1948, which was Intended more as a pictorial survey of the scene as it was during that quarter-century, when the railways of Great Britain may be said to have attained their maximum era of achievement and, for the enthusiast, excitement. The two volumes have one thing in common, in that both cover the period from the 1923 Grouping, when six of the major companies and a few minor ones of Great Britain were amalgamated into one of the four groups thus created – in this case the London & North Eastern – and so up to Nationalization ln January 1948 when all became a heterogeneous entity, British Railways.
In both books the main accent has been placed on the older pre-Grouping types, whilst not of course entirely neglecting the new designs introduced by Sir Nigel Gresley and his successors.
